Curtin University Malaysia reached a meaningful milestone on 6 February as it celebrated the graduation of the first diploma cohort from its School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE).
The university auditorium was filled with pride and excitement as 28 of the 46 graduates attended the ceremony in person to receive their certificates. The graduating class represented three key programmes — Diploma of Commerce, Diploma of Information Technology, and Diploma of Media Studies — reflecting the growing pipeline of skilled talent for emerging and industry-relevant sectors.
Certificates were presented by Curtin Malaysia Pro-Chancellor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan. The ceremony was witnessed by Sarawak Minister for Transport and Chairman of the Curtin Malaysia Management Committee Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, alongside Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Vincent Lee, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, Dean of SPACE Professor Fidella Tiew, faculty deans, senior management, and proud family members.
Academic excellence was honoured through three special awards sponsored by Curtin Malaysia’s industry partner, PMG Healthcare Group.
- Chloe Hii Jing Yie received the PMG Best Diploma of Commerce Graduate Award.
- Sim Zhi Hao was named PMG Best Diploma of Information Technology Graduate.
- Meghan Gituen Lim earned the PMG Best Diploma of Media Studies Graduate Award.
In his keynote address, Dr. George Chan emphasised that Curtin’s diploma pathways serve as a strong foundation for industry-relevant skills, internationally recognised qualifications, and seamless progression to undergraduate studies. He encouraged graduates to step confidently into the workforce or continue their academic journey, describing a Curtin diploma as “a mark of readiness, a signal of potential, and a gateway to greater achievements.”
He further urged graduates to embrace problem-solving, communication, and critical-thinking skills with courage and resilience, highlighting that adaptability and creativity will be essential in navigating a rapidly evolving world. “Your diploma is a stepping stone, not a finish line,” he reminded them.
Professor Vincent Lee noted that the graduates were completing their studies at a university ranked among the top one per cent globally and the highest-ranked university in Borneo. He expressed confidence that they would apply their knowledge to create meaningful impact within their communities and industries while carrying forward Curtin’s values of innovation, curiosity, and global citizenship.
