Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) Sarawak: Transforming Access to Higher Education in 2026

by Admin• Published February 9, 2026

A Historic Step Toward Free University Education in Sarawak

Sarawak is setting a new benchmark in education with the introduction of the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), a groundbreaking initiative that will provide free university education for eligible Sarawakian students beginning in 2026. As the first programme of its kind in Malaysia and among the few in the ASEAN region, FTES reflects the Sarawak Government’s long-term commitment to investing in human capital, strengthening the future workforce, and ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent young people from pursuing higher education.

Participating Universities Under FTES Sarawak

Under the FTES programme, tuition fees for selected undergraduate programmes will be fully covered at four key higher learning institutions in Sarawak:

  • Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus
  • Curtin University Malaysia
  • University of Technology Sarawak (UTS)
  • i-CATS University College

These institutions offer internationally recognised and industry-relevant programmes, allowing Sarawakian students to receive quality tertiary education within the state while reducing the need to study elsewhere.

Courses Covered Under Free Tertiary Education

FTES will initially support multiple undergraduate programmes aligned with Sarawak’s economic and development priorities. Key study areas include:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Accounting, finance, and business studies
  • Law and professional programmes
  • Medicine, health sciences, and psychology

By focusing on future-ready and high-demand careers, FTES ensures graduates are well prepared to contribute to Sarawak’s long-term development under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

Financial Support Beyond Tuition Fees

Beyond free tuition, FTES also provides living allowances for students from low-income families, helping to cover accommodation, meals, and essential daily expenses. This comprehensive financial support significantly reduces the total cost of university education and enables students to focus on academic achievement rather than financial pressure.

Such assistance is particularly meaningful for students from rural and interior regions, improving education access, social mobility, and equal opportunity across Sarawak.

Building Sarawak’s Future Through Education

The Free Tertiary Education Scheme is more than a financial aid initiative. It is a strategic investment in Sarawak’s human capital and economic transformation. By expanding access to university education, Sarawak aims to nurture skilled professionals, encourage innovation, and create sustainable growth for future generations.

Ultimately, FTES represents hope, opportunity, and inclusive progress. It empowers Sarawakian youth to pursue their ambitions, strengthens communities through education, and positions Sarawak as a regional leader in free higher education and talent development.
