Bridging the Gap to Higher Education
The Western Australian Universities' Foundation Program (WAUFP) is an academic pathway specifically designed for international students to transition from secondary school to university-level study. Students engage in a curriculum that balances rigorous academic subjects with essential cultural and linguistic preparation. The program focuses on developing the critical thinking and independent research skills required for success at top-tier institutions. Every student studies the compulsory subject of English Language and Australian Cultural Studies (ELACS) for nine hours per week, which helps them meet the literacy and communication standards of Australian universities while understanding the local social context.
Tailored Learning and Academic Environment
Being a student in this program involves a shift towards a more independent and focused learning style. Beyond ELACS, students select a minimum of three elective subjects based on their intended degree, such as Chemistry, Accounting and Finance, Human Biology, or Mathematics Methods. Each elective receives four and a half hours of tuition per week. The atmosphere at Canning College is one of high expectations paired with intensive support. Students have access to a dedicated Learning Centre where they can receive small-group or individual assistance from specialist teachers to master difficult concepts in their chosen stream.
University Integration and Future Pathways
The program offers a clear advantage through its strong connection to the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC), which manages university applications in Western Australia. Successfully completing the WAUFP guarantees entry into any of the five major Western Australian universities, including The University of Western Australia and Curtin University, provided the specific degree's entry score is met. The program also provides opportunities to interact with university representatives on campus, allowing students to build familiarity with their future campus environment. This early exposure helps reduce the "culture shock" of moving into a large university setting and ensures students are career-ready with a globally recognized pre-university qualification.
