Bridging the Gap to University Success
The Year 11 program at Canning College is specifically designed for international students who want to build a rock-solid foundation before entering their final year of high school. This course focuses on improving academic English skills while introducing students to the rigorous Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) curriculum. Students study a combination of core subjects and electives, including a heavy emphasis on English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D), which receives nine hours of dedicated classroom time each week. By focusing on Science inquiry and advanced Mathematics, the program ensures students have the technical vocabulary and analytical skills needed for Year 12 and beyond.
A Mature Learning Experience
Life as a Year 11 student at Canning College feels very different from a traditional high school. The college operates on a university-style campus where students are treated as young adults. There are no school uniforms and no bells to signal the start of class, encouraging students to take personal responsibility for their schedules and study habits. This adult learning environment helps international students adjust to the style of teaching they will eventually encounter at major institutions like The University of Western Australia or Curtin University. The pace is steady but focused, with small class sizes that allow for meaningful interaction with experienced teachers who specialize in supporting international learners.
Interactive and Collaborative Culture
The classroom experience is highly interactive, moving away from simple memorization toward collaborative problem-solving. Students engage in practical laboratory work for science subjects and group discussions in social science electives, such as Psychology or Economics. Because the campus is multicultural, students naturally develop intercultural communication skills while working on team projects. This collaborative culture is balanced with independent research tasks, teaching students how to manage their time and use the extensive Learning Centre facilities effectively.
Pathways to Future Goals
Successfully completing Year 11 at Canning College opens clear doors for further study. Most students progress directly into Year 12 WACE to aim for an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), while others choose to move into the WA Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP). This course is essentially the first step in a journey toward competitive university degrees in fields like Medicine, Engineering, or Commerce. By the end of the year, students have not only earned academic credits but have also gained the confidence and study techniques required to thrive in the high-stakes environment of final-year exams and university entrance.
