Master of Philosophy (By Research)

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is an advanced degree aimed at extending your expertise beyond undergraduate honours or postgraduate diploma levels, culminating in the completion of a research thesis. It serves as a pathway for those seeking to further their academic pursuits, including progression to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

This research-focused qualification emphasises independent study, with at least two-thirds of the programme devoted to research activities. While limited coursework may be included, the primary focus is on developing a thesis under the guidance of an academic supervisor or supervisory team. The thesis must present an original contribution to your field—whether through new findings, innovative theories, or fresh interpretations of existing work—and demonstrate your ability to design and conduct substantial independent research.

The MPhil can be undertaken full-time or part-time, with a minimum study period of one year and a maximum of two years for full-time enrolment, subject to adjustments for approved leave. For international students studying onshore with a student visa, the full-time registered duration is two years. Research Training Scheme places may be available, alongside fee-paying enrolment options.
