Understanding the Needs of Young Children
Students in this course learn how infants and toddlers grow, develop, and explore the world around them. The lessons focus heavily on child psychology and physical growth milestones from birth to three years of age. Instead of just memorising facts from textbooks, students look at real-life scenarios to identify how young children learn through their senses. Classroom hours involve analyzing child behavior videos to understand specific emotional needs, helping students learn how to build safe, secure attachments with infants through daily caregiving routines.
Creating Play Environments and Designing Activities
A large part of the training takes place in mock classroom settings where students design and set up physical learning areas. Students learn to arrange furniture, choose safe toys, and organize materials that encourage children to explore safely. Assignments require students to create lesson plans, select storytelling props, and practice singing nursery rhymes or guiding sensory play. The coursework also teaches the standard rules of childcare hygiene, nutrition plans, and safety management, ensuring that students can maintain healthy spaces in a childcare center.
Working with Families and Community Stakeholders
The course guides students on how to communicate professionally with parents and build a bridge between the childcare center and the home. Students participate in role-playing exercises during classes to practice discussing a child's daily progress, behavioral updates, or health concerns with family members. They also explore ways to involve local community resources to enrich the preschool experience. These activities build practical communication skills, ensuring that students feel comfortable handling parent-teacher updates when they start working.
Real-world Learning in Licensed Childcare Centers
To complete the course, students must spend 200 hours in a supervised practical placement within an operating childcare center. During this internship, students assist full-time teachers in feeding, diapering, playing, and managing groups of infants and toddlers. Students keep a reflective learning log where they document their observations, evaluate their own teaching methods, and receive direct feedback from center supervisors. This hands-on experience helps students build confidence and apply everything they learned in class directly to real childcare settings.
