Exploring Fashion and Business Foundations
This diagnostic program introduces students to the fundamental concepts of both the creative and commercial sides of fashion. Students spend time studying modules like Design Principles, Fashion History and Culture, and Fashion Marketing and Merchandising. The modules help students understand how clothes are made, how brands are built, and how fashion trends move through different cultures. This balanced structure ensures that students learn how to think like a creative designer while also understanding consumer behavior and brand strategy.
Developing Practical Studio Skills
Students spend a significant amount of time doing practical work in studios. They learn essential 2D and 3D design skills, including sketching by hand, creating technical drawings, and using mixed media for design development. The lessons guide students through the manual work of handling fabrics, drafting patterns, draping, and sewing complete pieces. Rather than sitting through typical written exams, students are evaluated purely through coursework, where they present 3D prototypes, physical products, reports, and visual presentations.
Creating a Design Portfolio
A major focus of the course is compiling a professional portfolio. Lecturers support students as they gather creative research, explore color concepts, and develop their own design ideas. This portfolio combines physical art materials and digital design work to show a student’s progress and personal style. Having a compiled design portfolio helps students clearly demonstrate their skills when they apply for higher-level degrees or entry-level creative jobs. Detailed program structures can be viewed directly on the official MDIS Course Page.
Future Educational Pathways
After completing this qualifications, students have a clear path to continue their university education. Graduates can move directly into the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Fashion Product and Promotion program. This progression allows students to turn their diploma into a full bachelor's degree. The foundational knowledge built during these nine months prepares students for advanced modules in fashion management, visual merchandising, and international fashion branding.
