Human Physiology and Core Sports Studies
The early part of this degree sets a baseline for understanding how the human body moves and reacts under physical stress. Students spend their initial semesters studying anatomy, bioenergetics, and human physiology. In these classes, they learn how individual muscle groups interact, how food breaks down to power cardiovascular systems, and how the body changes during continuous training. Coursework also details the core aspects of sport and exercise psychology, teaching students to spot patterns in athlete behavior and motivation.
Biomechanics and Practical Laboratory Work
As students progress, the focus moves into analyzing movement mechanics and measuring raw athletic outputs. Through modules in introduction to biomechanics and exercise physiology, students work directly in practical laboratory classes to calculate acceleration forces and evaluate joint angles. They run fitness tests using oxygen tracking software, perform physical fitness monitoring, and utilize calculation exercises to map energy expenditure. Alongside tracking elite physical performance, students also examine how physical activity, nutrition, and health interact to prevent chronic diseases within local communities.
Advanced Applied Specializations and Research Methods
In the second stage, the curriculum becomes deeply practical, introducing dedicated modules in the principles of strength and conditioning, applied sports nutrition, and applied biomechanics. Students learn how to tailor diet schedules for long-distance athletic events and create periodized physical training templates for specific sports. They study dedicated research methods to learn how to clean up data sets and design controlled physical test environments. This phase prepares students to move past basic observation and start advising clients on real modifications.
International Transfer and Practitions Projects
The final stage takes place at the main UK campus within the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences BSc Honours Sport and Exercise Science Course Page. This unique 2+1 study pathway lets students spend their final year learning directly from active sports practitioners. Students work on an intensive research project where they get to apply their skills with local sport organizations. This setup provides a chance to study real sports teams, analyze movement data for performance athletes, and understand how specialists handle injury recovery or strength training inside established professional clubs.
