Learning the Foundations of Therapy
Students begin by diving into the core theories of human occupation, anatomy, and how people interact with their environments. Since this degree is specifically designed for individuals coming from non-therapy undergraduate backgrounds, early classes focus heavily on basic pathology, psychology, and occupational science. Rather than just reading textbooks, students spend significant time in the specialized spaces at the Perdana University Kuala Lumpur Campus. In these dedicated therapeutic labs, students practice basic patient handling techniques, analyze movement patterns, and learn how various health conditions impact daily living activities.
Hands-on Practice and Specialized Care
As the semesters progress, the focus moves into clinical areas like paediatrics, musculoskeletal health, mental health, and care for ageing populations. Students work through real-life case studies where they learn to evaluate patient needs and design personalized rehabilitation plans. In the dedicated splinting laboratory, students learn how to fabricate custom orthotics and supports. Meanwhile, the simulated living spaces on campus allow students to practice environmental modifications, such as adapting a home layout for a wheelchair user or rearranging kitchen spaces for stroke recovery.
Clinical Placement and Research Experience
To build real-world clinical confidence, students must complete 1,000 hours of supervised clinical placement across different healthcare settings. These placements take place in partnership with the Ministry of Health, major medical centers, and private hospitals, giving students direct experience with patients of all ages. Alongside clinical practice, students complete an independent research project where they study contemporary community health challenges, explore ergonomic solutions for workplaces, or investigate new rehabilitation tools.
Career Pathways and Professional Goals
Graduates can build careers as certified occupational therapists, community-based rehabilitation specialists, or ergonomic consultants in corporate environments. The training covers diverse therapeutic domains, preparing individuals to work in general hospitals, private pediatric clinics, mental health centers, or elderly care homes. Because the learning takes a hybrid format, students balance structured lectures with hands-on lab sessions, developing the practical problem-solving skills needed to guide patients back to independence.
