The Bachelor of VFX and Virtual Production at the SAE Brisbane Campus is a hands-on program designed for students who want to master the art of creating digital worlds and high-end visual effects. Instead of traditional exams, the course focuses on project-based learning where students spend their time in studios rather than lecture halls. From day one, learners engage with the technical and creative processes used in modern filmmaking and game development.
What You Will Study
The curriculum is built around the "how" and "why" of the industry. Students begin by learning the foundations of 2D and 3D asset production, cinematography, and compositing. As they progress, they dive into advanced subjects such as physics-based procedural animation using tools like Houdini, and real-time visual effects within Unreal Engine. A major highlight of the course is the focus on Virtual Production, where students learn to use LED volume technology and real-time engines to blend live-action footage with digital environments instantly.
Life as a Student
Being a student in this program feels more like working in a professional studio than attending school. The environment is high-energy and collaborative, mirroring the fast-paced nature of a real VFX house. Students work alongside peers from film, games, and animation disciplines, sharing ideas and troubleshooting complex technical challenges together. The Brisbane campus provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, including motion capture rigs and green screen studios, allowing students to experiment with the same gear used on major Hollywood productions.
Career Preparation
This course is specifically structured to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the professional world. In the final year, students undertake a Major Project and participate in work-integrated learning, which often includes industry placements. This ensures every graduate leaves with a professional-grade portfolio that showcases their skills in texturing, shading, digital sculpting, and compositing. Whether aiming to become a technical artist, a virtual camera operator, or a 3D modeller, graduates are prepared for the specific technical demands of the global entertainment and advertising sectors.
