Focus Areas of the Curriculum
The Master of Arts in Dance program is awarded by the University of West London and taught at Singapore Raffles Music College. The course divides its study into three main areas: performance, creativity, and research. Students dive into global dance conversations and look at how movement operates in different cultural spaces around the world. Instead of just practicing traditional routines, students learn to analyze movements and understand the theories behind choreography.
Media Production and Studio Work
A major part of the course focuses on how dance connects with modern technology and screen media. In the dance studios, students learn to adapt their choreography for cameras, films, and digital platforms rather than just a live theater stage. The curriculum includes practical training in managing a full dance production. Students learn the logistics of putting together a show, coordinating backstage elements, and understanding the presentation sides of professional performance.
Teaching Practice and Academic Research
Students explore educational strategies to understand how to guide other dancers effectively. They examine teaching styles and learn how to manage dance classrooms or community workshops. Alongside practical dancing, the program requires significant academic writing and investigation. Students take specific research method modules to prepare for their final dissertation. The course finishes with an independent Master's Project, where each student chooses a specific dance topic, conducts deep research, and combines their practical skills with written academic findings.
