Students entering this program step into a vibrant, creative world where they learn to turn abstract ideas into tangible digital assets. The curriculum is built around active, learner-centered experiences where students take a lead role in their own creative discovery rather than just listening to lectures.
Building Digital Worlds and Characters
A significant portion of the student experience involves the design and animation of original characters. Students don't just draw; they learn the mechanics of motion, such as run and walk cycles, to create a professional motion portfolio. These characters are then brought to life using industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Cloud and Toon Boom Harmony. By working on custom-built workstations with Wacom Cintiq drawing tablets, students get a feel for the professional environment they will eventually enter.
Collaborative Filmmaking and Storytelling
The course places a strong emphasis on storytelling across different formats. Students work together in small teams to run a live-action film set, taking on various production roles to develop a short film. This environment mirrors a real production house, where communication and coordination are just as important as technical skills. Students also explore traditional and digital sculptural techniques to build sets and characters for stop-motion films, blending tactile craftsmanship with modern digital recording.
Gaming and Interactive Design
Students explore the principles of game design by creating their own 2D platformer games for the PC. This involves everything from conceptualization to prototyping and final publishing. The creative process is iterative, meaning students spend time testing their games, gathering feedback, and refining their designs. This practical approach ensures that the "elements and principles of design" aren't just definitions in a book but active tools used to improve the quality of their work.
A Foundation for the Creative Industry
The primary goal of this Level 3 certificate is to prepare students for higher education within the creative sector. Graduates typically pathway into a New Zealand Certificate in Creativity (Level 4) or specialize further in diplomas for animation, game design, or screen production. The portfolio of practical work created during the semester serves as a key asset for advancing into these more advanced programs at SIT's campuses.
