Laying the Foundations of Game Mechanics
Students begin their journey by exploring the essential building blocks of interactive entertainment. They spend their first weeks learning the fundamentals of game design, where they deconstruct existing titles to understand how mechanics and physics create immersion. In the studio, students move from theory to practice by drafting their first 2D levels and experimenting with basic coding to make characters move and react. The learning environment is highly practical, mirroring a junior developer's typical day where troubleshooting and iterative testing are constant parts of the creative process.
Visual Storytelling and Digital Artistry
A significant portion of the course focuses on the visual language of the screen. Students take part in studio drawing sessions, practicing both physical and digital methods to refine their character development and world-building skills. They learn to create storyboards and animatics, translating narrative ideas into a visual sequence that guides production. By using industry-standard software for 2D animation, students bring their characters to life through expressive poses and timing, ensuring every movement serves the larger story of the game or cutscene.
Working as a Creative Team
Collaboration is at the heart of the student experience at SIT's Invercargill campus. Participants often find themselves in cross-disciplinary workshops, where they work alongside film and animation students to tackle real-world creative briefs. These group projects require students to manage timelines, communicate effectively, and lead specific project phases, preparing them for the social dynamics of a professional studio. This social environment extends beyond the classroom, as students document their project progress and critique each other's work to build a stronger collective portfolio.
Pathways to the Professional World
The diploma serves as a direct bridge to more advanced study or entry-level industry roles. Graduates often choose to transition into the Bachelor of Screen Arts at SIT, entering directly into the second year of study to specialize further. For those ready to enter the workforce, the multidisciplinary training provides a broad base of skills suitable for roles such as 2D artist, UI designer, or junior animator. By the end of the year, every student leaves with a diverse portfolio that showcases their ability to handle both the technical and creative demands of modern screen production.
