The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE Western Australia prepares you for leadership roles in Australia's growing early childhood education sector, recognized in most states as the highest qualification required at director or service manager level for children's service centre-based care and education. This nationally recognized qualification develops skilled educators capable of designing and implementing curriculum that meets approved learning framework requirements while maintaining compliance in all service operations.
Comprehensive Leadership Training: Master 15 units of competency including 12 core units and 3 elective units carefully selected in consultation with industry. Develop essential skills in managing team effectiveness, maintaining safe and healthy environments for children, fostering holistic early childhood learning development and wellbeing, nurturing creativity in children, facilitating compliance in children's education and care services, fostering positive and respectful interactions and behavior in children, implementing strategies for inclusion of all children, analyzing information to inform children's learning, planning and implementing children's education and care curriculum, embedding environmental responsibility in service operations, working in partnership with children's families, and reflecting on and improving your own professional practice.
Practical Industry Experience: Complete a minimum of 280 hours of supervised work placement in regulated early childhood education and care services, providing opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real workplace environments. TAFE arranges suitable work placements within the industry, with lecturers conducting on-site visits to observe your progress and provide written and verbal feedback. Work placement attendance structure and hours per day are negotiated with host employers, requiring at least 7.5 hours of placement weekly throughout the qualification duration, with opportunities to spend additional time in the workplace to ensure optimal learning and employment readiness.
Flexible Study Options: Choose from multiple delivery modes including on-campus classes at various TAFE WA campuses across Western Australia (North Metropolitan, South Metropolitan, Central Regional, South Regional, and North Regional), online part-time self-paced study with scheduled assessment submission dates and some on-campus simulated assessments, or traineeship arrangements for those currently employed in the sector with primarily work-based learning supplemented by online collaboration with lecturers. Full-time on-campus students complete the qualification in two semesters, while part-time online students typically require three semesters, with approximately 10-12 hours of additional independent study required weekly outside scheduled contact hours.
Outstanding Employment Outcomes: Over 90% of TAFE WA graduates gain employment upon completion, qualifying for diverse roles including Child Care Centre Coordinator, Crèche Supervisor, Child Care Supervisor, Playgroup Leader, Room Leader, and other leadership positions across long day care centres, family day care, preschools, kindergartens, and various regulated early childhood education and care settings experiencing increased demand driven by population growth and emphasis on early childhood development importance.
University Pathways: TAFE WA diplomas qualify for entry into undergraduate degrees at all Western Australian universities. Upon successful completion, meet university entrance requirements for Bachelor of Education degrees specializing in Early Childhood Studies, potentially receiving advanced standing or credit for up to 5 units (equivalent to just over 1 semester study reduction).
