Interdisciplinary Scientific Foundation
The Bachelor of Environmental Science with Honours brings together multiple disciplines to help you understand how natural systems function and how human activity impacts them. In your first year, you will explore everything from Chemical Principles and Global Environmental Change to Ecology and Evolution. This broad base ensures you have the scientific vocabulary to communicate across different fields, which is essential for solving "wicked" problems like biosecurity risks or natural disaster impacts.
Immersive Labs and Fieldwork
A significant portion of your student life is spent outdoors or in the lab. The degree includes 400 hours of practical work experience, often conducted through summer placements. You might spend days at Cass Mountain Research Area collecting freshwater samples or using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to map coastal erosion. These activities aren't just about data collection; they are about learning to apply Mātauranga Māori (indigenous knowledge) alongside Western science to gain a holistic "mountains-to-the-sea" view of environmental management.
Specialization and the Honours Year
You will tailor your degree by choosing one of six specialized majors, such as Freshwater Resources, Environmental Contamination, or Ecosystem Health and Biosecurity. In your final Honours year, you focus on high-level research and assessing environmental risks. This involves analyzing complex case studies and communicating scientific findings to the public and policy makers. This intense focus prepares you for immediate professional practice or advanced postgraduate research, such as a Master of Environmental Science.
Connection to the Professional Landscape
Because the degree was developed in response to high employer demand, you are frequently in contact with environmental practitioners from local councils and consulting firms. You learn to navigate the legal and social aspects of environmental issues, which makes you a "big part of the solution" for global challenges. Whether you are interested in becoming a conservation officer, a sustainability strategist, or a resource manager, the Christchurch location provides a perfect "living laboratory" where your studies directly reflect the restoration efforts happening in the region.
