A Fusion of Creativity and Technical Science
This degree is unique because it blends artistic design with rigorous engineering and business principles. You will choose one of three distinct majors—Industrial Product Design, Digital Product Design, or Chemical Formulation Design—which dictates whether your day-to-day involves sketching physical furniture, coding interactive apps, or mixing personal care products in a lab. Rather than just making things look good, you spend your time investigating materials, analyzing mechanical wave behaviors, and testing the structural integrity of your creations to ensure they solve real-world problems effectively.
The Studio and Laboratory Environment
As a student in the School of Product Design, your learning takes place in specialized workshops and modern design suites. You will find yourself moving between 3D printing labs to create rapid prototypes and computer labs where you use professional CAD software to visualize complex assemblies. The atmosphere is highly practical; from your very first year, you are assigned projects that require you to build tangible items, often working in small teams to simulate a professional design consultancy environment. This social and collaborative setting helps you develop the communication skills needed to explain your technical decisions to both clients and colleagues.
Business Acumen and Commercialization
What sets this course apart is the mandatory inclusion of business and marketing courses, such as the Fundamentals of Management and Principles of Marketing. You won't just learn how to design a product; you will learn how to build a business case for it, identifying target markets and calculating production costs. In your final year, you take on more significant individual projects where you follow the entire lifecycle of a product from initial research and ideation through to a finished prototype ready for potential commercial launch.
Career Pathways and Professional Future
Graduates are prepared for diverse roles, such as industrial designers, UX/UI specialists, or formulation scientists for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Because you gain a mixture of technical engineering knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, many students also look toward starting their own design-led companies or working in research and development for global manufacturing firms. If you are interested in further academic depth, this degree provides a pathway into the Master of Product Innovation, where you can focus on bringing a specific invention to market.
