A Blend of Science and Human Connection
During your time at UC, you will dive into a curriculum that mixes medical science, linguistics, and psychology. You won't just learn about how speech works; you will study the neuroscience of communication and the complex mechanics of how we swallow. Being a student in this course means moving between high-tech labs and intimate seminar rooms where you discuss real-life case studies. You will learn to use specialized tools to analyze speech sounds and use diagnostic software to help people with hearing or neurological impairments.
Clinical Training in Real-World Clinics
The highlight for many students is working at the university’s on-site speech and hearing clinics. Starting as early as your second year, you will observe and eventually lead therapy sessions under the guidance of expert clinicians. You might spend your morning helping a child with a stutter and your afternoon assisting a stroke patient who is relearning how to eat safely. By the final year, up to 50% of your studies consist of fieldwork, placing you in hospitals, schools, and private practices across New Zealand.
Independent Research and Honours Project
As an Honours student, you will develop the ability to think like a researcher. In your third and fourth years, you will take responsibility for assessing clients and designing their management plans. You will also conduct an original research project on a topic that interests you, such as the impact of digital communication on speech development or improving rural access to therapy. This analytical focus prepares you not just to be a therapist, but a leader in the field who uses evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes.
A Globally Recognized Professional Path
The BSLP(Hons) is accredited by the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists' Association (NZSTA). Because of mutual recognition agreements, your qualification can help you find work in countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Ireland, and Australia. Whether you choose to work in a busy metropolitan hospital, a rural primary school, or pursue a Master of Audiology, the program provides a versatile foundation for a career dedicated to helping people reclaim their voice.
