Clinical Training and Laboratories
Student life revolves around the School of Psychology, Speech and Hearing, where you spend significant time in four on-campus laboratories. These facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art electronic assessment tools, allowing you to practice hearing tests and balance assessments in a controlled environment. You’ll move from observing senior audiologists to performing clinical procedures yourself, learning how to use complex diagnostic software and calibrate hearing aids under expert supervision.
Science and Patient Care
The curriculum blends biological science with interpersonal skill development. You will study the intricate anatomy and physiology of the human ear and vestibular system alongside courses in acoustics and speech perception. A major focus is placed on learning how to communicate sensitive diagnostic information to patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Assignments often involve analyzing real-world case studies to determine the best treatment plans, ensuring you understand the human impact of hearing loss.
Professional Clinical Placements
Beyond the campus, you will participate in intensive clinical practice rotations across various healthcare settings. These placements provide a first-hand look at the daily operations of public hospitals and private clinics. You might assist in a pediatric audiology unit or help fit digital hearing technologies for adults. This exposure is vital for building the clinical competence required to work independently after graduation, as you learn to adapt your technical knowledge to the diverse needs of real patients.
A Pathway to Professional Practice
This program is formally endorsed by the New Zealand Audiological Society (NZAS), making it a direct pathway to becoming a registered audiologist in New Zealand. In your second year, you will complete an audiological research project, contributing new insights to the field while refining your data analysis skills. Whether you aim to enter private practice, work in a hospital setting, or pursue further research, the combination of clinical hours and academic rigor prepares you for a fulfilling career helping others reconnect through better hearing.
