The Master of Product Design (MProdDesign) at the University of Canterbury is a specialized 180-point program that merges technical engineering knowledge with creative business strategy. You will learn to navigate the entire commercial lifecycle of a product, from the initial "lightbulb moment" to final market delivery. The curriculum is specifically designed to help you master sophisticated design practices while understanding the manufacturing and business analysis required to survive in a modern, shifting consumer market.
Hands-on Creation and Prototyping
Student life is centered in the Te Kura Hanga Otinga | School of Product Design, where the boundary between a classroom and a workshop disappears. You will spend a significant portion of your time in specialized laboratories and workshops equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and metal and wood processing tools. Whether you are formulating new fragrances or building immersive AR/VR game environments, you are encouraged to physically build and test your ideas. This "learn by doing" approach ensures that your design theories are always grounded in what is technically possible to manufacture.
Original Research and Thesis
A major part of this degree (120 points) is dedicated to an original research thesis. Under the supervision of faculty experts, you will identify a gap in the market or a technical challenge and spend your final year solving it. You might choose to specialize in Bio-Inspired Design, Games for Health, or Sustainable Cosmetic Formulation. This deep dive into a single project allows you to develop a self-critical design practice and the advanced problem-solving skills needed to lead innovation in any sector.
Bridging Design and Industry
The environment at the School of Product Design is inherently interdisciplinary, connecting design students with the university's commerce and engineering expertise. You aren't just making objects; you are learning how to pitch to sellers and market to consumers. This commercial focus prepares you for diverse career pathways, including roles in Research and Development (R&D), production management, or even launching your own business enterprise. For those aiming for the highest level of expertise, the MProdDesign also provides the necessary foundation to transition into a PhD in Product Design.
