An Extended Bridge to Engineering Success
The Degree Transfer Extended Engineering program at the College of International Education (CIE) provides an extra layer of preparation for students aiming to enter the University of Newcastle. It begins with a dedicated bridging semester focused on five core non-credit units, including Core Mathematics and Physics. This initial phase ensures students have a solid foundation in technical concepts before they begin the credit-bearing subjects that make up the first year of a Bachelor's degree.
Academic Support and University Immersion
As a student in this program, you will spend your first few months sharpening your study skills and technical vocabulary. Learning takes place at the Newcastle Callaghan Campus, where you have full access to university libraries, labs, and student services from day one. The classroom experience is designed to be more personal than a standard lecture hall, with small class sizes allowing for frequent one-on-one interaction with teachers who specialise in helping international students adjust to Australian academic standards.
Developing Technical Proficiency
Once the bridging semester is complete, the curriculum mirrors the standard Degree Transfer Engineering. You will engage in practical programming projects using C++ in the Introduction to Procedural Programming module and learn the ropes of professional ethics and standards in Professional Engineering Practice. Assignments often involve hands-on work, such as using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to solve mechanical problems or performing laboratory experiments to test the properties of various engineering materials.
Secured Entry to Specialised Fields
Successfully completing this 16-month program leads directly into the second year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at the university. Graduates can choose from eleven different specialisations, ranging from Civil and Mechatronics to Renewable Energy Engineering. This pathway is particularly valuable because it removes the need for further English language testing (like a second IELTS exam) upon transition, provided students meet the academic requirements during their time at CIE.
