The Bridge to Creative Confidence
The Degree Transfer Extended program acts as a dedicated preparation phase, offering a "soft landing" into the Australian education system. The first semester is a specialized bridging term where students focus on five core subjects: Academic English, Computing, Economics, Commercial Law Fundamentals, and Programming. This initial phase ensures that students from diverse educational backgrounds have the technical and linguistic tools needed to thrive when they begin their intensive media production units in the following semesters.
Immersive Storytelling and Production
Once the bridging semester is complete, students move into the same curriculum as first-year university students. Learning is highly active and takes place at the Newcastle City Campus (NUspace), a high-tech hub where students use professional-grade equipment. In courses like Media Storytelling and Foundations in Digital Photography, students aren't just sitting in lectures; they are out in the field capturing images and building narratives. The program emphasizes the "making" aspect of media, encouraging students to experiment with different formats, from traditional broadcast styles to modern digital content.
Collaboration in a Digital World
A significant part of the student experience involves working in teams to solve creative problems. The Creative Collaborations unit brings together students to work on design briefs, mimicking the environment of a real media agency. Students also master Digital Practices in Visual Communication, learning how to use industry-standard software for graphic design and video editing. This is paired with Commercial Social Media Production, where students analyze how to create viral, engaging content for brands in the current market.
Your Path to the University Degree
By successfully completing this 15-course program, students earn 80 credit points, which guarantees direct entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Media and Communication at the University of Newcastle. Students can then choose to major in specialized areas like Public Relations, News Media, or Media Production. This extended pathway is ideal for students who want extra time to adjust to university life while ensuring they stay on track to graduate with a world-class degree.
