Foundations of Engineering Thinking
Students begin their journey with a common first year that introduces the fundamental principles shared across all major engineering branches. You will spend time in modern Sydney City Campus facilities learning how to apply mathematical and scientific theories to solve practical problems. The curriculum is built around eight core subjects that ensure you have a strong grasp of design and technical communication before you choose a specific focus area.
Specialised Major Pathways
After mastering the basics, you select a key program in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering. If you choose Civil, you might study the mechanics of materials and structural analysis; Electrical students dive into circuit theory and power systems, while Mechanical students focus on thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. This stage feels more focused as you work with academic staff who guide you through 14 subjects specifically tailored to your chosen discipline.
Practical Immersion and Lab Work
Learning isn't restricted to textbooks; it is a highly active process. You will participate in tutorials and workshops where you test theories in real-world scenarios. A critical part of the course is the 12-week industrial experience component, where you step out of the classroom and into a professional engineering environment. This period allows you to see how technical projects are managed and how different systems interact in a workplace setting.
Transition to Professional Practice
By the final year, the focus shifts toward preparing you for the workforce or further study. You will complete two elective subjects, which can be chosen from any discipline at the Sydney City Campus, allowing you to add a unique edge to your degree. Graduates typically emerge as Engineering Technologists, ready to work in manufacturing, infrastructure, or product design, or they may choose to transfer into the final stages of a professional Honours degree.
