Introduction and Historical Overview
Canning College stands as Western Australia's premier specialist pathway institution, uniquely positioned as one of Australia's first government institutions dedicated to international education. Established in 1982 by the Education Department of Western Australia, the College was originally created to provide opportunities for adults to return to education at Year 12 level. Over four decades, Canning College has evolved into a distinguished educational institution that serves both international and local students seeking quality pathways to Australia's leading universities.
Located on Marquis Street in the peaceful residential suburb of Bentley, just 9.7 kilometers southeast of Perth's city center, Canning College occupies a strategic position directly adjacent to Curtin University. This proximity to one of Western Australia's major universities provides students with exceptional access to university facilities and creates a genuine university-style learning environment that eases the transition to tertiary education.
The College's journey in international education began when the first government-sponsored international students arrived in 1982. Four years later, in 1986, Canning College enrolled its first privately-funded overseas students, marking a significant milestone in the institution's evolution. Under the leadership of Principal Mr. Jim Casey, the College enrolled 90 fee-paying students from Malaysia and Singapore in the Year 12 program that year. This modest beginning laid the foundation for what would become a thriving international education program.
The establishment of a dedicated international office in 1986, focusing exclusively on the needs of overseas students, positioned Canning College as a pioneer and leader in international education in Australia. Since then, the institution has built an enviable reputation for providing excellent educational opportunities and comprehensive support services for international students seeking quality pathways to university.
In a significant development, the Western Australian government announced in 2019 that Canning College would become the state's dedicated provider of education programs for international students completing senior secondary programs. For five years, the College focused exclusively on international education, refining its programs and services to meet the unique needs of students from around the world. Then, in 2024, Canning College reintroduced local and domestic students to its programs, creating a truly international campus environment where students from Perth engage with peers from approximately 20 countries across the globe.
Academic Programs and Pathways
Canning College offers a comprehensive suite of academic programs designed to provide clear, straightforward pathways to university for students at various educational levels. The programs range from Year 10 studies through to diploma-level qualifications, each carefully structured to prepare students for success in tertiary education.
Western Australian Universities' Foundation Program (WAUFP)
The WA Universities' Foundation Program represents one of Canning College's flagship offerings, providing an efficient and effective pathway into Australian universities. This globally recognized qualification can be completed in either eight or ten months, with flexible intake options in January, April, and August to accommodate different student circumstances and timelines.
The January entry follows a standard one-year program completed in November, with results and confirmed university offers issued by mid-December, allowing students to commence university at year one level the following February. The April entry offers an accelerated seven-month program, also completed in November with the same progression timeline. The August entry provides another standard one-year option, completed in the following May, with results issued by mid-June for university commencement in July.
Thousands of students have successfully completed the WA Universities' Foundation Program on their way to top universities, including institutions in Australia's prestigious Group of Eight. The program provides excellent academic preparation for university studies while ensuring students feel confident about their transition into tertiary education. High-performing students may be eligible for scholarships offering up to 40 percent reduction in tuition fees, making quality education more accessible.
The Foundation Program has been specifically designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to achieve entry into university degree programs. Students can package their WAUFP studies with preferred universities and courses under arrangements Canning College maintains with The University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University, and the University of Notre Dame Australia.
Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)
Canning College delivers the Western Australian Certificate of Education program across Years 10, 11, and 12, providing students with the nationally recognized WA school qualification. This program offers entry into degree courses across Australia and is perfect for students who prefer to complete their secondary education in a university-style environment rather than a traditional high school setting.
The Year 10 program comprises the mandated learning areas of Western Australian Curriculum, including Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Health and Physical Education. Students study two hours of Physical Education, one hour of Health Education, and the equivalent of five hours of each core subject weekly.
For Years 11 and 12, students work toward achieving the WACE ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), which determines university entry. The College environment is distinctive in that students are not required to wear uniforms, and there are no bells or sirens to indicate the start of lessons or break periods. This university-style approach requires students to develop self-management skills and take responsibility for their learning, preparing them effectively for the independence expected at university level.
The College also offers a WACE General University Pathway, which combines WACE General subjects with a Certificate III in Business and Curtin University's UniReady in Schools program. Successful students are prepared to enter selected university degree programs at Curtin and Murdoch University.
Diploma of Commerce
The Diploma of Commerce represents Canning College's most advanced pathway program, equivalent to first-year Bachelor of Commerce studies at either the University of Western Australia or Curtin University. This intensive one-year program, offered over two semesters with intakes in February and July, allows students to progress directly into the second year of bachelor's degree programs upon successful completion.
Students complete six compulsory core units covering Accounting, Business Information Systems, Business Law, Economics, Marketing, and Management, alongside two elective units chosen based on their intended major. The program totals 720 hours of instruction delivered at 20 hours per week, closely following university academic calendars with scheduled breaks for assignment preparation and exam revision.
The curriculum is rigorous and comprehensive. In Accounting, students understand the role of accountants in society and demonstrate knowledge of accounting principles and their application in business environments. Economics provides understanding of how societies address scarcity and work toward improved living standards. Marketing covers foundational principles including market segmentation, consumer behavior, and marketing mix strategies through real-world case studies and research projects.
Management studies develop understanding of the evolution of management theories and practices, examining how environmental factors influence management implementation. Business Information Systems explores the integration of technology with business processes to enhance organizational efficiency. Business Law equips students with understanding of legal frameworks governing business operations.
Elective options include Accounting (Managerial), which provides advanced knowledge in managerial accounting with analytical and technical skills for planning and decision-making; Consumer Behaviour, examining psychological and sociological factors influencing purchasing decisions; and other specialized units preparing students for diverse careers in business, marketing, and commerce.
Upon successful completion, students can articulate into Year 2 of Bachelor of Commerce programs at UWA or Curtin University, or into second-year business and commerce programs at Murdoch University and the University of Notre Dame Australia.
Certificate IV in University Access Program
The Certificate IV in University Access Program serves as a valuable six-month pre-diploma program designed to prepare students for university-level studies. This program provides an alternative pathway for students who may not meet direct entry requirements for diploma or degree programs.
The Certificate IV leads into the Canning College Diploma of Commerce as well as a range of degree programs at Curtin University and Murdoch University. This flexibility allows students to choose the pathway that best aligns with their academic goals and career aspirations. Scholarships are available for high-performing students entering this program.
Bridging Programs and English Language Support
Recognizing that English language proficiency is crucial for academic success, Canning College offers Intensive English programs for both international and local students. These programs help students improve their English skills before progressing into mainstream academic programs.

These programs demonstrate the College's commitment to meeting students wherever they are in their educational journey and providing the support necessary for success.

Exam workshops are available to help students prepare effectively for assessments, providing strategies and techniques for optimal performance.

International Student Services
A dedicated student services team ensures international students receive comprehensive support to transition into living in Perth and develop the study skills and self-management habits essential for their learning. A comprehensive orientation program introduces international students to life in Western Australia, covering practical daily living skills such as navigating the city using public transport, understanding Australian culture, and accessing essential services.
The orientation program also facilitates social connections, helping students make friends quickly and build support networks. Cooking classes are offered to help students develop confidence in preparing meals and managing their nutrition while living independently.
Accommodation support is provided through a dedicated staff member who gives advice and assistance with housing options. International students can choose from homestay arrangements, on-campus accommodation at UniLodge Vickery House, off-campus rental properties, or staying with biological relatives who reside in Perth.
Global Student Program
The College's Global Student Program extends learning beyond the classroom by developing leadership skills and preparing students for the transition into tertiary studies. This program recognizes that university success requires more than academic knowledge—it demands personal growth, intercultural competence, and practical life skills.
Students are encouraged to participate in events and activities that enrich their experience and build a strong culture of internationalization on campus. With hundreds of international students from around 20 countries engaging with local students, Canning College provides a genuinely multicultural learning environment where intercultural understanding and engagement are key facets of the educational experience.

Perth, consistently ranked as one of the world's most liveable cities, provides an ideal environment for international students. As a modern western-style city of approximately two million people, Perth offers the full range of efficient services and facilities without suffering from problems such as pollution or traffic congestion that plague larger metropolitan areas.
The Mediterranean-type climate provides a comfortable natural environment with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Perth's beaches are among Australia's finest, offering pristine white sand and clear waters just 20 minutes from the city center. The city's location provides easy access to natural attractions including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and scenic coastal drives.
Perth is at the center of a dynamic economy where mining and associated industries provide excellent employment opportunities. This economic strength translates to robust post-study work opportunities for international graduates who wish to gain professional experience in Australia.
The city offers international students a welcoming, friendly, and safe environment where they can enjoy high-quality education and lifestyle at reasonable cost compared to larger Australian cities like Sydney and Melbourne. With almost 30 percent of Perth's population originating from other countries, the city embraces cultural diversity and provides international students with a supportive, inclusive community.
