About This University

Introduction and Historical Foundation

Curtin University stands as Western Australia's largest and most culturally diverse university, serving over 58,000 students from more than 130 countries across its global network of campuses. Named after John Curtin, Australia's 14th Prime Minister who served from 1941 to 1945, the university embodies his philosophy of looking ever forward, embracing innovation, practical research, and industry engagement as core pillars of its educational mission.

The university's roots extend back to 1900 with the establishment of Perth Technical School, later renamed Perth Technical College. This institution laid the foundation for what would become one of Australia's leading technological universities. The genesis of modern Curtin came about through the vision and efforts of four key figures in Western Australia's post-war educational landscape: Dr. Lesley Phillips, Superintendent of Technical Education from 1943 to 1948; his successor William George Inglis Hayman; Thomas Logan Robertson, the WA Director of Education; and Dr. Haydn Williams, Director of Technical Education who became the institution's first director.

Following World War II, education was recognized as fundamental to Western Australia's economic development. With the Perth Technical College operating beyond capacity, plans emerged for a new specialized tertiary institution to serve industry's professional needs. On June 19, 1962, Premier David Brand announced that a new type of 'college' would be built at Bentley, on Noongar land that was formerly the site of the Collier Pine Plantation.

The Western Australian Institute of Technology was established in 1966, with major infrastructure completed on the Bentley campus. The WAIT Act received assent in December 1966, mandating the new institution to provide practically focused higher education courses relevant to industry needs. The first students enrolled in 1967, beginning their educational journey as part of an inaugural class. Dr. Haydn Williams served as the first director of WAIT, guiding the institution through its formative years.

In 1969, WAIT significantly expanded through mergers with three established institutions: the Kalgoorlie School of Mines, originally opened in 1902; the Muresk Agricultural College, dating from 1926; and the Schools of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, operating since the 1950s at Shenton Park. This consolidation brought diverse educational strengths under one institutional umbrella.

Between 1966 and 1976, WAIT experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 2,000 students to 10,000. The institution continued evolving, adding PhD programs in 1982 and establishing an Aboriginal Studies unit in 1983. A Technology Park opened in 1986, further cementing WAIT's commitment to industry collaboration and innovation.

In December 1986, under provisions of the WA Institute of Technology Amendment Act, WAIT was conferred university status. The institution was renamed Curtin University of Technology, taking its name from the revered former Prime Minister. In 1987, Curtin University of Technology became Western Australia's third university and Australia's first university of technology. By the mid-1990s, enrollment had reached 20,000 students, establishing Curtin as one of Australia's largest universities.

Academic Structure and Programs

Curtin University comprises five main faculties, each offering comprehensive programs across undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels. The university operates over 95 specialist centers, demonstrating depth and breadth in research and teaching capabilities.

Faculty of Business and Law

The Curtin Graduate School of Business, founded in 1993 and strategically located in Perth's CBD, builds on the success of Curtin's MBA program. Originally established in St Georges Terrace, the school upgraded to Murray Street premises in 2002, where it continues building its profile and reputation among business professionals and students.

The Curtin Law School, launched to meet growing demand for legal education in Western Australia, initially operated from the Perth campus before relocating to dedicated premises at 57 Murray Street in the CBD. This strategic positioning places law students in the heart of Perth's legal district, facilitating connections with law firms, courts, and government legal departments.

Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences offers diverse programs in nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, speech pathology, psychology, public health, nutrition, and allied health disciplines. The faculty's programs emphasize practical clinical experience, with students completing placements at major hospitals, community health centers, and specialized healthcare facilities throughout Western Australia.

Curtin maintains strong partnerships with healthcare providers including Royal Perth Hospital and the Oral Health Centre of WA in Nedlands, where university staff, researchers, and students engage in practical training and research. These collaborations ensure students gain real-world experience while contributing to healthcare service delivery.

Faculty of Humanities

This faculty encompasses programs in education, social sciences, media and communication, cultural studies, Indigenous studies, psychology, and creative arts. The Centre for Aboriginal Studies, which opened in a purpose-built facility, offers a culturally appropriate space for Aboriginal students and staff while cementing Curtin's commitment to increasing educational opportunities, self-empowerment, and recognition for Indigenous peoples.
