About This University

Introduction and Historical Background

Edith Cowan College stands as a pioneering pathway institution in Perth, Western Australia, holding the distinction of being the founding college of the Navitas Group, which has grown to become the world's largest provider of university pathway programs. The College's story began in 1994 when it was first established as the Perth Institute of Business and Technology (PIBT) through an innovative partnership between Navitas founders Rod Jones and Dr. Peter Larsen and Edith Cowan University. This groundbreaking collaboration introduced a revolutionary concept to Australian education—dedicated pathway colleges that bridge the gap between students' current qualifications and university entrance requirements.

The institution holds a unique position as the only educational establishment in Australia named after a woman—Edith Cowan, who made history in 1921 as the first woman elected to an Australian parliament. Edith Cowan was a social reformer and women's rights activist who championed causes including children's welfare, education reform, sex education in schools, migrant welfare, and infant health centers. Her legacy of breaking barriers and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups aligns perfectly with the College's mission of providing accessible pathways to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds.

In 2016, following 22 years of successful operation as PIBT, Navitas and Edith Cowan University entered into an enhanced joint venture partnership, with both organizations holding equal 50-50 ownership. This milestone prompted the institution's rebranding from Perth Institute of Business and Technology to Edith Cowan College, reflecting its deepened connection with the university. Since its inception in 1994, over 10,000 students have successfully transitioned from the College into Edith Cowan University degree programs, demonstrating the effectiveness of the pathway model.

The College is fully accredited by the Australian government under the Higher Education Act 2004 and is registered with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), which ensures rigorous quality assurance standards. Additionally, the College holds CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) registration under provider code 01312J, permitting it to enroll international students and deliver education services to students on Australian student visas.

Campus Locations and Facilities

Edith Cowan College operates across two strategic locations within Edith Cowan University's campus network, providing students with immediate immersion in authentic university life while receiving specialized pathway support. The primary campus for diploma programs is located at Building 80, Joondalup Campus West, situated at 10 Injune Way, Joondalup, approximately 25 kilometers north of Perth's central business district. The Joondalup campus is ECU's largest and serves as the university's headquarters, offering students access to world-class facilities including a multi-million dollar sports and fitness center, an award-winning library renovated with cutting-edge technology, the student hub, outdoor cinema screenings during summer months, extensive computer laboratories with 24-hour access, modern lecture theaters, and specialized science and engineering facilities.

The College's English language programs operate from the Mount Lawley campus at Building 10, 2 Bradford Street, Mount Lawley, located just 5-6 kilometers from Perth's CBD. This campus provides easy accessibility via public transport, with Transperth buses linking it to both the city center and Morley bus station. The Mount Lawley location is known for its proximity to the vibrant Beaufort Street café strip and offers a more intimate campus atmosphere. It is also home to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), one of Australia's most prestigious performing arts institutions, creating a culturally rich environment. However, it should be noted that ECU announced the Mount Lawley campus will close at the end of Semester 2, 2025, with programs relocating to the new ECU City campus in Perth's CBD and to Joondalup.

Both campus locations provide ECC students with full access to ECU facilities from day one. Students can utilize the university libraries, participate in student clubs and societies run by the ECU Student Guild, access counseling and student support services, enjoy campus dining options including cafés and restaurants, use recreational facilities, and engage with the broader university community. This co-location strategy ensures that pathway students experience genuine university culture while receiving the additional academic scaffolding they need to succeed.

Academic Programs and Pathways

Edith Cowan College offers a comprehensive suite of programs designed to prepare students for successful university study, ranging from English language preparation through to postgraduate qualifying programs.

Diploma Programs

The College's flagship offerings are its diploma programs, which provide accelerated pathways into the second year of corresponding bachelor's degrees at Edith Cowan University. These intensive programs typically span 8-12 months and cover the equivalent content of first-year university study, but with smaller class sizes, additional support, and teaching approaches tailored to pathway students' needs.

The Diploma of Commerce develops fundamental business knowledge across accounting, economics, marketing, management, and finance. Graduates gain direct entry into the second year of ECU bachelor's degrees in business disciplines, enabling completion of a three-year bachelor's degree in the standard timeframe despite entering through a pathway route.

The Diploma of Communications and Creative Industries prepares students for careers in media, public relations, advertising, journalism, and creative fields. The program emphasizes critical thinking, creative expression, professional communication skills, and media literacy essential for success in these dynamic industries.

The Diploma of Hotel Management provides comprehensive preparation for careers in tourism and hospitality management. Students learn front office operations, food and beverage management, housekeeping, event management, and tourism principles, building both practical skills and theoretical understanding of the hospitality sector.

The Diploma of Science (Computing/IT) equips students with foundational knowledge in programming, database management, network administration, cybersecurity, and information systems. This pathway leads to second-year entry into ECU's computing and IT bachelor's programs, including degrees in computer science, cybersecurity, and IT.

The Diploma of Science (Engineering) provides core engineering principles including mathematics, physics, mechanics, materials science, and introductory engineering design. Students can progress to various engineering disciplines within ECU's School of Engineering, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering.

The Diploma of Health Science offers pathways into diverse healthcare fields. The program includes specialized streams for nursing, biomedical science, psychology, exercise science, speech pathology, and nutrition bioscience. Students develop understanding of human anatomy, physiology, health systems, research methods, and discipline-specific foundations relevant to their chosen healthcare career path.

Foundation Program

The Foundation Program serves students who have completed high school or equivalent but require additional preparation before commencing undergraduate studies. This program provides access to over 250 undergraduate courses across eight schools at ECU: Arts and Humanities, Business and Law, Engineering and Technology, Medical and Health Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, Science, Teacher Education, and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. The program focuses on developing core academic skills, subject knowledge, and English language proficiency required for university-level study while familiarizing students with Australian teaching methods and academic expectations.

Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP)

The PQP provides a pathway for students holding bachelor's degrees but not meeting direct entry requirements for specific ECU master's programs. This non-award program develops advanced academic skills, research capabilities, and subject-specific knowledge needed for postgraduate study. Programs are available in Business, Communications, IT, and Social Work, with each tailored to the specific demands of the corresponding master's degree. Upon successful completion, students gain guaranteed entry into their packaged ECU postgraduate program.

English Language Programs

The Academic English Program (AEP) delivers comprehensive English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), helping students develop the English proficiency required for tertiary study. The AEP focuses on academic English skills including essay writing, report preparation, oral presentations, research skills, and critical reading. Programs are offered in flexible durations from 5-52 weeks, with placement determined by diagnostic testing. The College also offers Teacher Training Courses for English language educators and customized Study Tour Programs for international student groups.

Teaching Quality and Student Support

Edith Cowan College distinguishes itself through personalized, close-contact teaching that prioritizes individual student needs. Small class sizes, typically ranging from 15-30 students, enable teachers to provide tailored support, identify learning challenges early, and adapt instruction to diverse learning styles. This individualized approach contributed to the College ranking #2 in teaching quality and student support amongst Australian Navitas colleges in the 2022 QILT (Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching) survey results.

The College employs highly qualified academics with both industry experience and teaching expertise. Faculty members understand the unique challenges international and non-traditional students face when entering tertiary education and provide appropriate scaffolding for academic success. The teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning, practical application, continuous feedback, and gradual development of independent learning skills necessary for university study.

Comprehensive student support services ensure holistic wellbeing throughout students' pathway journeys. Dedicated Learning Advisors provide one-on-one academic support, available by appointment via email at learningsupport@ecc.edu.au or through online booking. Academic Program Coordinators oversee specific programs and address course-related queries. The Student and Academic Services Team assists with enrollment, timetabling, course changes, and general student inquiries. Students also access ECU's broader support network, including counseling services, multifaith chaplaincy, student health services across all campuses, legal and career advice, and financial support resources.

Scholarships and Financial Support

Edith Cowan College and Navitas offer numerous scholarships and bursaries rewarding academic merit and supporting students with financial need. The 10-Week English Scholarship, valued at AUD 4,750, is available to international students combining English programs with Diploma or Foundation studies. The Navitas Academic Merit Scholarship provides free tuition for one study period to students achieving outstanding results, awarded automatically based on academic performance with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70%.

The Family Bursary assists students with siblings or family members also studying at Navitas colleges worldwide. The International Undergraduate Scholarship 2025-2026 offers 20% tuition fee reductions for students from selected countries entering ECU via ECC pathway programs. Importantly, most scholarships are automatically applied when students meet eligibility criteria—separate applications are typically unnecessary.

Beyond ECC scholarships, students progressing to ECU access additional university scholarships including the International Undergraduate Scholarship and International Postgraduate Scholarship, both offering 20% tuition reductions for the duration of studies. ECU also provides equity scholarships for students experiencing financial hardship, rural students, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and students with disabilities.

Student Life and Multicultural Community

With students hailing from over 50 countries, Edith Cowan College celebrates cultural diversity and fosters an inclusive community where individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, and faiths thrive together. This multicultural environment enriches learning experiences, broadens perspectives, and develops intercultural competencies essential in today's globalized world.

Students engage in university life through the ECU Student Guild, which operates clubs, societies, and events across campuses. Social activities, sports competitions, cultural celebrations, and academic societies provide opportunities for friendship, leadership development, and community building. The College encourages student leadership through dedicated programs, welcoming applications from passionate students ready to challenge themselves and contribute positively to the ECC community.

Life in Perth, Western Australia

Perth provides an exceptional setting for international education, combining world-class urban amenities with stunning natural beauty. As Australia's fourth-largest city and Western Australia's capital, Perth offers a high quality of life, consistently ranking among the world's most livable cities. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, along with beautiful beaches, extensive parklands, and the scenic Swan River.

Perth's multicultural population creates a welcoming environment for international students. The city center offers shopping, dining, entertainment, and cultural attractions, while surrounding regions provide access to wineries, national parks, and unique Australian wildlife. Perth's relative isolation from Australia's eastern cities creates a distinctive, relaxed lifestyle while maintaining all the sophistication of a modern metropolis.

For students, Perth offers more affordable living costs compared to Sydney or Melbourne, part-time employment opportunities, safe neighborhoods, excellent public transportation, and a supportive international student community. The city's time zone alignment with many Asian countries also facilitates communication with family and friends across the region.

Pathways and Progression

The streamlined pathway from ECC to ECU provides clear progression routes and guaranteed university entry upon successful program completion. International students benefit from single-visa applications covering their entire educational journey, including English language studies, pathway programs at ECC, and bachelor's or master's degrees at ECU. This integrated approach simplifies immigration processes and provides peace of mind.

The College maintains strong progression rates, with the vast majority of students successfully transitioning to their chosen ECU degrees. The physical proximity of ECC facilities to ECU buildings means this transition often requires simply "walking around the corner" rather than relocating to a different campus, easing the adjustment process.
