About This University

RMIT’s strategy to 2031 refines a vision and mission that has been part of our DNA since 1887.

We continue to consider our greatest achievement the graduation of genuinely global citizens, ready to drive impact and differentiate ourselves through the way we use our teaching and research assets, and our networks, to contribute to the communities we serve.

This new strategy focuses on using our knowledge, skills and capabilities to make a difference in the world – that's why we called it Knowledge with Action. It is a clear, direct statement of intent – to convey our positive ambition and the way it applies equally to the many different, and distinctly important, threads of RMIT.

Perhaps most important, it’s about what a university like RMIT can bring to and share with the communities we serve. We’re going to extend our positive impact across Southeast Asia, with RMIT Vietnam as the cornerstone of our capabilities and reputation in the region.

We’re going to mobilise the global RMIT community of students, alumni, staff and partners into a distinctive ecosystem that’s intentionally connected for collaboration. We’re going to design and scale truly innovative education solutions, focused on future industry that will support accessible skill development for every learner at every stage. And we’ll be known for our translational research to help solve real and pressing problems – the very definition of knowledge with action, to help achieve an inclusive, sustainable future.

RMIT is a university of significant scale and substance, so we believe that our ambition should match our opportunity. To hold us to account, we aim to lead in four key areas:

  • emerging technologies
  • smart and sustainable cities
  • social innovation
  • and regional collaboration.

These distinct ambitions underpin our commitment to be a leading university of impact in the Asia Pacific region, equipping all RMIT learners with the skills, knowledge and connections to succeed.

Our shared success will be life-changing – for individuals, for communities, and for generations to come. This is the difference we want to make.

Through this strategy - Knowledge with Action, we build on strong foundations, because preparing future generations for life and work is what we do. It is what we have always done. Education Plan to 2025: Learning through Life and Work

RMIT's Education Plan operationalises the first horizon of Direction 1 of RMIT's Strategic Plan, Knowledge with Action. Across four action areas it details our approach to enhancing life and work through stimulating, high-quality, educational experiences and pathways, connected across RMIT’s distinctive, open learning ecosystem, powered by expert educators who challenge and inspire..

RMIT University acknowledges the people of the Woi wurrung and Boon wurrung language groups of the eastern Kulin Nation on whose unceded lands we conduct the business of the University. Our cutting-edge facilities represent our commitment to developing world-class learning, teaching, training and research spaces.

RMIT was established in 1887 as the Working Men’s College with the aim of bringing education to the working people of Melbourne.

RMIT at a Glance

Our teaching, learning and research programs are continually updated so that students, staff and graduates are equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

At the same time, we have not forgotten our past as one of Australia’s original educational institutions, and we have remained true to our original philosophy.

Since 1887, our inner-city campus has been a vital part of the City of Melbourne, from the 1880s boom through world wars, the Great Depression and renewed prosperity during the second half of the 20th century.

RMIT was awarded royal patronage by Queen Elizabeth II for its educational service to the Commonwealth and contribution to the war effort, and RMIT remains the only higher education institution in Australia with the right to use the prefix “Royal” and the Monarchy's coat of arms.

During the 1990s, the institution gained university status and developed campuses in Bundoora and Brunswick in the city's northern suburbs, and later in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam.

In 2013, RMIT opened a research and industry collaboration centre in Barcelona, Spain.

With significant teaching partnerships in Asia and Europe, as well as research and industry partnerships on every continent, RMIT has a strong global presence.
