About This University

A Global Pioneer in Creative Media Education

SAE Institute was founded in 1976 by sound engineer, record producer, and entrepreneur Tom Misner, who converted a small advertising studio in Sydney into Australia's first practical classroom dedicated to audio engineering. What began as a single room with basic equipment has grown into one of the world's largest and most respected creative media education networks, now spanning 47 campuses across 20 countries and educating over 12,500 students globally.

From its earliest days, SAE broke new ground as a truly hands-on, industry-focused education provider. Over the next six years after its founding, campuses opened in Melbourne (1977), Brisbane (1980), Adelaide, and Perth, establishing SAE's presence across Australia. The mid-1980s saw rapid international expansion with campuses opening in London (1985), Munich (1986), Frankfurt, Vienna, Berlin, Auckland, and Glasgow. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, SAE continued its global reach, opening locations across Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East.

A Historic Milestone: University College Status

On December 22, 2023, SAE Creative Media Institute Australia achieved a momentous milestone by becoming a University College – one of only seven institutions in Australia to hold this elite designation, and the only one nationally delivering creative media education. The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) reserves the University College category exclusively for the highest-performing institutes of higher education, recognizing SAE's exceptional quality, academic rigor, and industry impact.

This elevation to University College status represents nearly five decades of educational excellence and innovation. In 2013, SAE was awarded Higher Education Provider of the Year by the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET), and became the only Australian institution to join the prestigious Berklee College of Music International Network. In 2010, SAE was acquired by Navitas Limited, a publicly-traded Australian education services company, which has supported SAE's continued growth and development while maintaining its pioneering approach and culture.
