About This University

Your Pathway Partner to University Success

Swinburne College is a partnership between UP Education and Swinburne University of Technology that's been helping students reach their university dreams since 2020. If you're aiming for a Swinburne degree but need a bit of extra support or don't quite meet the direct entry requirements yet, this is exactly where you need to be. The college specializes in pathway and English language courses designed to get you university-ready, and they're really good at it – over 5,000 students have successfully completed their programs here and moved on to Swinburne bachelor or master degrees.

Originally planned as "Swinburne Academy" back in 2019, the college officially launched in early 2020 as Swinburne College. It's a joint venture that brings together UP Education's 20+ years of expertise in supporting international students with Swinburne University's academic excellence. All programs are delivered under Swinburne University's official TEQSA and CRICOS registrations, which means you're getting the real deal – university-quality education in a more supportive environment.

Location and Campus Life

You'll be studying right on Swinburne University's Hawthorn campus at John Street, Hawthorn – just 10 minutes from Melbourne's CBD. This isn't some separate facility; you're on the actual university campus from day one, which means full access to everything Swinburne offers. The campus sits in the heart of Hawthorn, surrounded by Glenferrie Road's cafés, restaurants, bars, boutiques, and bookshops. It's the perfect student lifestyle environment.

Getting there is super easy. Glenferrie Station is right nearby on the Glen Waverley and Belgrave/Lilydale train lines, trams 16, 70, and 72 run along Burwood Road, and there are plenty of bus services. Once you're on campus, you'll find state-of-the-art facilities including the impressive Advanced Technologies Centre (locals call it "the cheese grater building"), modern libraries with 24/7 late labs, the George Swinburne building with study areas and games rooms, world-class laboratories, and comprehensive recreational facilities.

Programs Offered

Swinburne Foundation Program (8 months)

This is your entry point if you've completed Year 11 in Australia or an equivalent overseas qualification and want to get into a Swinburne bachelor degree or UniLink diploma. The 8-month program covers all the fundamental academic skills you'll need: research, writing, critical thinking, maths, and IT. You'll complete 8 units total – 6 core units plus 2 electives. If you're heading toward design, you can choose Design Fundamentals or Drawing and Illustration as electives. Different disciplines have their own recommended units to prepare you properly.

Three intakes per year (January, May, September) give you flexibility on when to start. Once you successfully complete the program, you're guaranteed entry to first-year bachelor degrees or UniLink diplomas at Swinburne. Tuition for 2025 is approximately AUD 30,960 for the full 36-week program. CRICOS code: 113264C.

UniLink Diplomas (8 months)

These are proper higher education qualifications – accredited diplomas that count as the equivalent of first-year university. Here's the brilliant part: when you finish a UniLink diploma and move into your Swinburne bachelor degree, you enter in second year with up to one year of credit. That means the diploma doesn't add extra time or cost to your overall degree – it's the same total duration, just with more support along the way.

You'll study similar content to first-year university students but in smaller classes with more one-on-one teacher time. It's perfect if you prefer a more supportive learning style or just missed the ATAR cutoff for direct entry. Available diplomas include Business, Commerce, Design, Engineering, Health Science, Information Technology, Media and Communication, and Science. Standard duration is 8 months with three intakes annually (February, June, October), though fast-track options may be available. 2025 tuition is approximately AUD 35,180 per diploma.

As a UniLink student, you're part of the thriving Hawthorn campus community from day one, with access to all the same facilities and services as bachelor degree students. Upon successful completion, you get guaranteed entry to second year of related Swinburne bachelor degrees.

UniLink Bridging Program

Need to meet UniLink diploma entry requirements? This bridging program helps you get there. It's designed for international students who've completed Year 12 equivalent but don't quite meet the UniLink entry requirements yet, want to transfer from another Australian provider, or lack prerequisite subjects for design, engineering, or science courses.

Smaller class sizes mean you get plenty of support developing the communication skills you'll need at university level. You'll complete three elective units chosen based on your pathway – Design stream, Engineering/Science stream, or Business/IT stream. Once you finish, you progress straight into your chosen UniLink diploma.

Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP) (6 months)

Thinking about a Swinburne master degree but haven't met the English language or academic entry requirements? The PQP combines English language training with academic studies to get you ready for postgraduate success in areas like business administration, marketing, supply chain innovation, IT, and related fields.

After 6 months, your English competency is deemed equivalent to IELTS 6.5, and you receive guaranteed entry to first year of Swinburne master degrees. You'll need a 3-year post-secondary qualification and IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) or equivalent to enter. Multiple start dates throughout the year give you flexibility.

English Language Intensive Courses (ELICOS)

Whether you need to improve your everyday English or specifically prepare for university-level study, ELICOS has you covered. General English focuses on day-to-day language skills and prepares you for further English studies. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teaches the specific language skills you'll need at university and helps you meet Swinburne's English entry requirements.

Your course content and length (anywhere from 5 to 60 weeks) are personalized to your existing English level. Courses start every 5 weeks, so you can begin when it suits you. You'll have access to self-guided and online learning resources, participate in group projects and excursions, and can join student clubs. Once you complete EAP and meet the minimum requirements, you may be eligible to transfer straight to your chosen Swinburne course.

Student Support – The Swinburne College Student Hub

This is where Swinburne College really shines. The Student Hub is more than just an academic support center – it's your community. You can connect with academic advisors who provide educational advice, attend workshops to improve your learning, and get specific help with assignments, presentations, and exam prep. Student ambassadors are available for one-on-one or small group collaboration.

The hub offers English language skills development including Conversation Club to improve your speaking skills and confidence. It's also a social space where you can connect with other pathway students, feel supported, and adjust to Melbourne life. The team provides guidance on pathway options and helps you plan your progression to university.

As an international student, you'll also have access to dedicated International Student Advisors, English language support, visa renewal assistance, and accommodation advice. And remember – from day one, you have full access to all Swinburne University facilities: libraries, computer labs, sporting facilities, health services, psychology and counselling, career services, and student clubs and societies.

Scholarships and Financial Support

Swinburne offers the International Scholarship (Merit-Based Pathway) specifically for Foundation Year, UniLink diploma, or Postgraduate Qualifying Program students. If you're commencing in 2025 or 2026, you're automatically considered when you apply. Eligible students receive 20% off tuition fees for the entire course duration – that's a significant saving.

The Access Scholarship is available for students who've completed VET qualifications (including UniLink Diplomas) and can demonstrate financial or personal hardship. It's valued at $5,500 in your first year and $5,000 per year for two more years (maximum 3 years total). Some international students may also qualify for annual awards of $2,500 for up to 2 years.

FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students in UniLink programs, making pathway education accessible for local students too.

Why Swinburne College Works

You're not just preparing for university in isolation – you're already part of it. Studying on the actual Swinburne campus means you're integrated into university life from day one. Swinburne University is ranked in the top 300 globally and has strong partnerships with industry leaders like Amazon Web Services, Siemens, Oracle, and Adobe. The university is known for science, technology, innovation, business, and design excellence.
