About This University

A Legacy of Excellence in Hospitality Education

Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) at Torrens University has been launching hospitality careers since 1991, when it was officially opened by then NSW Premier Nick Greiner as Australia's first internationally recognized hotel management program. What started over three decades ago has grown into what Kantar 2020 ranks as the #1 Hotel Management School in Australia and Asia-Pacific, with QS World University Rankings 2024-2025 placing BMIHMS in the top 3 in Oceania for Hospitality and Leisure Management.

In 2016, BMIHMS became part of Torrens University Australia, giving students access to a broader university network while maintaining the specialized, industry-focused education that made BMIHMS famous. The school has produced over 7,000 graduates from almost 100 nationalities who now work in 90 countries across the world in 50 different hospitality professions – a truly global alumni network.

BMIHMS was the first school in Australia to be internationally recognized for delivering the Swiss International Management Program model, and it's a member of THE-ICE (The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism & Hospitality Education), an independent accreditation body specializing in hospitality education. All courses are fully accredited by TEQSA (Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency) in accordance with the Australian Higher Education Standards Framework, ensuring you're getting quality education that meets rigorous government standards.

The Unique Two-Campus Learning Model

What sets BMIHMS apart is its innovative two-campus model for undergraduate students. You won't just read about hotel management in textbooks – you'll actually live it.

Leura Campus - Years 1 & 2 (Practical Learning Centre)

Located in the stunning Blue Mountains UNESCO World Heritage site, about 90km west of Sydney (1.5-2 hour train ride), the Leura campus sits on 6 hectares of landscaped private gardens. This isn't just a classroom – it's a fully operational simulated hotel run by students for students. You'll gain hands-on experience in all aspects of hotel management while living on campus in a residential setting.

The campus features lecture and seminar rooms, computer labs, commercial kitchens, training restaurants (including Chambers fine dining restaurant, Cascades international fusion bistro, and Cookie's café), fully operational hotel-style guest services including front desk operations and housekeeping departments, library, BBQ and student lounge areas, free Wi-Fi, soccer field, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pool, and gyms. There's even a 24-hour duty manager on site for facilities and security.

All first-year undergraduate students must live on campus in twin-share accommodation with international students to foster cultural awareness. In second year, you can request a single room through the Return to Request form, though availability is limited. Main meals are provided three times daily in restaurant settings, giving you that real hotel dining experience. The Blue Mountains location immerses you in one of Australia's most celebrated natural landscapes – think steep cliffs, eucalyptus forests, waterfalls, and the iconic 200-million-year-old Three Sisters rock formation. You might spot wallabies, kangaroos, and crimson rosellas while heading to class!

During your time in Leura, you'll complete two six-month paid industry placements with some of the world's most prestigious hotels and hospitality organizations. These aren't just internships – they're genuinely paid work experiences that build your resume and professional network.

Sydney Campus - Year 3 (Executive Business Centre)

In your third year, you'll move to the Surry Hills campus in Sydney, located steps away from Central Station on the fringe of Sydney's CBD. This modern, state-of-the-art campus at 1-37 Foveaux Street features lecture theatres, computer labs, student lounges, kitchens, vending machines, study spaces, campus-wide WiFi, and a community room.

Surry Hills is Sydney's cultural and creative hotspot, known for its thriving social scene. You'll have cafés, bars, restaurants, boutiques, and galleries right at your doorstep. The campus shares space with other Torrens University students studying business, design, and health courses, giving you broader university connections. Unlike Leura, this is a non-residential campus, so you'll find your own accommodation – giving you that real adult independence experience while finishing your degree in Australia's largest city.
