About CIE and What It Offers

It offers structured pathway programs that build academic skills, confidence and English proficiency while giving students access to almost all the facilities and services available to university students.
When you study with CIE, you are fully integrated into the University of Newcastle community, meaning you receive a standard University of Newcastle student card, can use campus facilities such as libraries and gyms, and participate in clubs and activities — just like any other university student.

Pathway Programs: Foundation, Degree Transfer & Pre-Masters
CIE offers a range of pathway programs designed to lead you directly into a University of Newcastle degree. These include:
Foundation Studies Programs — A foundation year designed to equip you with the academic and English language skills necessary for entry into the first year of a wide range of undergraduate degrees. This program can run as 8-month or 12-month trimesters depending on your intake requirements and degree choice.
Degree Transfer Programs — Essentially equivalent to the first year of study at university and designed for students ready to progress into the second year of certain undergraduate degrees. These programs typically consist of academic courses and English units to help ensure you meet both academic and language expectations.
Pre-Masters Pathways — For students who plan to begin postgraduate study but need additional preparation academically or linguistically before commencing their preferred master’s degree.
All programs at CIE are registered with the University of Newcastle, meaning they use official university resources and are tailored to seamless progression into higher study at the university itself.
Learning Approach & Student Support
The learning environment at CIE is intentionally supportive and focused. Smaller class sizes and close contact with academic staff help students adjust to tertiary study expectations while receiving guidance on academic writing, research skills, critical thinking and communication — all essential for success at university.
Throughout your studies at CIE, you have access to personalised academic assistance, university-wide student services, workshops, career advice and more — the same support systems that degree students use at the University of Newcastle.
Orientation programs help you settle into life at CIE and Newcastle, offering introductions to university life, facilities, student culture and academic expectations so you can begin your studies with confidence.

Entry Requirements & Student Eligibility
CIE pathway programs are designed specifically for international students who are not eligible for direct entry into undergraduate or postgraduate degrees at the University of Newcastle.
Generally, entry into CIE programs requires recognition of prior study and English proficiency levels appropriate for that program — for foundation studies, degree transfer, or pre-master’s pathways. The College team provides guidance on requirements and can assist with the application process.
If you’re under the age of 18, it’s possible to study at CIE but you must be at least 17 at commencement and have appropriate welfare arrangements in place, such as homestay support arranged through the College or approved representatives.
Scholarships & Financial Support
Students progressing from CIE into the University of Newcastle degree programs may be eligible for progression scholarships, including awards like the International Excellence Scholarship — which can provide financial support over the duration of your degree.
These scholarships recognise academic achievement and are designed to help make university study more affordable as you complete your higher education journey after CIE.
Graduate Outcomes & Career Preparation
Completing CIE’s pathway programs means you are academically and socially prepared to meet the challenges of degree-level study. Students often progress into diverse fields at the University of Newcastle — including business, engineering, health sciences, IT, and more — with confidence and the skills needed for success.
The transition experience at CIE, combined with university academic support services and career guidance, helps you build a foundation for future employment and continued professional growth.
